Next Section

August 31st, 2010 by matthew

Well for the past few weeks ive been knuckle deep in a dark room for hours on end, making the most out of my tubekitty account you may ask? well not this time, im piecing together the film “i use the word film becuase it sounds more like a master piece”

.

I love starting each section, although by the end of it its all a blur and i just want the thing finished, but there have been a few sections I’ve really enjoyed putting time into, obviously the Roach section but also Dylan Lee’s section, ive just sorted through all the clips and its looking like the kid will come out with a pretty mental section, ill be interested to see where he is sitting in Peer Polls to come

.

Also guys stoked on all the ideas coming through, I’ve actually taken alot of them onboard, so keep the input coming

The Dungeon

August 20th, 2010 by matthew

Fortunately not the type of Dungeon you might see Alf Stewart lurking around, for the past 3 weeks i have spent hour after hour locked in this room punching out clip after clip, i have a new respect for all the guys making vids, the amount of time that goes into it is mental, but it seems to be addictive, it keeps you always coming up with new ideas, and new ways clips could work

.

Right now i would say the vid is about 60% done, I’ve had Dylan Lee over helping out, getting a second opinion which has been really good because you seem to fall into one way of thinking when your doing it alone

.

Also if you people out there want to leave a comment, throw out some ideas on anything from Music to what you want to see in the Video, drop a comment below

Motley Crue

August 17th, 2010 by matthew

For some reason alot of DK clips/sections these days are associated with Rap/Hip Hop music…Why? (beats me i hate the shit)…BUT in saying that different strokes for different folks, plus im no music buff ive never bought a CD in my life so what the hell would i know!

.

When i first started DK it was all about Fast Heavy Metal music to fast tail out surfing and thats what got me amped to go surf .Right now there is a young crew of DK riders living by that exact moto. Meet the Motley Crue, these guys are out of hand, long hair, shit tattoo’s and border line alcoho’s but at the end of the day have the talent to blow guys out of the water

.

These guys have character and thats what the sport needs more of right now

.

On a recent trip to DKS in Port Mac these three loose canons let loose on the town with a cheap video camera i gave them to film with documenting all the loose mayhem that went down, chicks – booze and mayhem was all that followed, they missed there heats, they got kicked out of there accom and tyson may be a father!!!????

.

Love em or Hate em, these guys don’t give a shit

change of plans

August 10th, 2010 by matthew

With the DKS contest coming up, i had the car packed for a solid week camping and surfing down in the national parks of NSW….That was until i got down the road and realised that my favourite right wedge was handing out an all you can eat fiesta, so end of the day the emotional self bonding camping trip got put on hold

2nd is the first loser

August 10th, 2010 by matthew

.

I have mixed feelings about contests, maybe im not competitive enough or maybe just the the simple fact i hate to lose? well whatever it is i tend to avoid contests like a politician avoids the truth

.

But DKS is not just another contest, its where all dropknee riders from all over OZ (and the world) come together and basically hang out, cruise and surf for a week, its something i try to be apart of every year, this year i was able to make the Port Macquare event held over the weekend, with a 3 foot right wedge it was the perfect setup for a hi-performance tail out action

.

The first thing i noticed was the level of surfing going on, fark me! every heat i was clutching at straws just scraping through, and with my track record making my first heat was already a win for me, one thing i loved about this event was that from the quarters on it was man on man, so really exciting to watch, alot of guys were blowing me away with there surfing, Jake Sharp was going mental on his backside, Damian King was showing guys how to DK on a bat tail plus pulling a (rocknroll todd de graff dedicated float) which left me speachless! Grant Malony never fell off plus so many other guys showing that DK here in Australia is stronger than ever.

I was lucky enough to progress into the man on man final with Grant Malony, this man is so hard to beat!! god dam!!! He even won the “rock-sizzors-paper” before the heat!!! but in the end of the day huge congrats to Grant!!..ill beat you one day!

.

Huge thanks to Clayton, the guy has done wonders for the sport of DK here in oz, unfortunately next year Clayton wont be able to run the DKS event, although i have a strong feeling there will be bigger and better events to come.

Also surfphotos.com.au, throwtail.com and Nathan Tyack for the pics

Jake Sharp – showing the why reason i call this guy one of the best in the world

taking the good with the bad

July 27th, 2010 by matthew

Well i hope you guys enjoyed the Philippines clip, nothing ground breaking but better than sitting in a shoe box going nowhere fast!

Since the clip i made my way back out into the Australian desert with the Nomad team testing all the new boards and materials along with good mate/filmer Lucus

Trip started out great, waking up to perfect waves with none in sight, i set up my water housing for Lucus to shoot with, things were looking good, about 20 minutes into the surf everyone getting barreled, sun is shining, whales are breaching (yes, literally 10 meters away in shark infested waters) and basically everything was all bells and whistles until Alex Halsey decided to punt a solid backflip onto my housing, the impact snapping my $1400 canon fisheye lens in half (i treat this thing better than my own mother!) now as you can imagine Alex and Lucus were feeling pretty bad (and so they farkn should!) hahahaaaa but me being the humble understanding guy i am i know that this kinda stuff is total accidental and shit happens….So with a snapped lens and a shattered man, we drive off to check another spot, but not without hearing another snapping noise under the wheel as we drive off…what was that?…i look back to see Chris James holding up a pair of crushed sunglasses…yep, mine!

So day 1 kicks off with a snapped lens crushed sunglasses and come that afternoon i get skull dragged over the reef so hard my knee and leg were now rendered useless, but thats not all, sunset brings a migraine rivaling someone beating a drum above my eye, so i now set up my tent and sleeping bag and continue to toss and turn all night in minus degree weather with a migraine and bung limbs!!! great first day!!!

Now with that all out of the way the rest of the trip actually ran really well, we continued to get amazing waves for the next week with not another person in sight

Plus no one got mauled by a Great White so ill take the good with the bad.

Lost on Cloud Nine

July 20th, 2010 by matthew

Few years ago i booked an around the world ticket with the Nomad team with first stop being Cloud Nine in the Philippines, for me it was a dream come true, i had a picture of cloud nine on my school book right back in primary school, and since then ive always wanted to surf the place

I needed to get it good, i couldnt go there and not get waves, but on arrival hearing that there hadnt been waves there in the past 6 weeks i was loosing hope fast, maps didnt look promising and 4 days into the trip and not seeing a wave over 1 foot i was starting to get worried

It wasnt until around the 6th day we woke up to the sound of waves, that sound didnt stop for the next 5 days, a dream come true for sure, just barrels and ramps for 5 days straight

I was cleaning out an old room when i came across a CD with “Philos-Matt” written on it, the thing was sitting in an old shoe box, turns out it was bunch of footage a guy shot while on holidays there with his wife

I dumped it into final cut and threw a quick edit together

Enjoy.

All Day Affair

July 17th, 2010 by matthew

Dylan Lee sets up while i prepare for a lip to the head

Daniel Bennington locks in for the Project

.

You think your local beachbreak is good, well unless that beach break is South Stradbroke think again, when conditions come together this beach break is the best in the world, Mexico has the consistency but when Stradbroke is on personally i think its more perfect, you can surf this place all day without doing one turn, thats only a good thing because your to busy getting barreled

This week the place flared up, i hit the water at first light and left on sunset, and being an island i survived on stolen water and a carrot

Daniel Bennington is a guy you will out there dominating on the knee, Dan has been collecting clips for the lackey project over the past few months and his section is looking strong with footage including South Pacific reef pass’s

Will George – would you rather

July 12th, 2010 by matthew

Instead of doing the same old questions (why do you dk? why do you breathe and so on) we here at the lackey project hit Californian Will George with a few “would you rather” questions…Rather pointless really, but gave me a reason to run his crazy backside pit below.

See everything in slow motion OR see everything move at double speed?
Double speed. The faster you go the slower everything around you gets. Give me speed.

Speak for only one minute a day OR stand for one minute each day?
Stand for one minute a day. I can go with out talking. I’ve got to roll man I’ve got to move around.

Have a red blinking light in the lower corner of your vision OR have a constant pinging in your ear?
These are fucked questions Lackey how about a bullet to the head? Shit I guess the blinking red light. I could wear a pirate patch over the red eye. The ringing in my ear would drive me to a mental institution.
Be Kelly Slater OR Paul Roach
Roach. I don’t know Slater but he seems like a real boring dude. Having a boring personality is pretty shit it doesn’t matter who you are!

Superbank

July 10th, 2010 by matthew

After a week in the Desert working on my new shapes for Nomad and hitting the reef so hard my whole arm went Black and Blue with bruising i was ready to hang up the fins for a few days once i got home and stretch out the injuries

But with the “superbank” coming alive once again there was no way i wasnt going to surf, paddling around like an injured seagull i still managed to lock into a few trenches

The banks have been so good  that at low tide surfers cant make the drop, with below sea level trenches being dominated by bodyboarders
