CRISPIN HUGHES

CRISPIN HUGHES – BACKDOOR

The first time i ever met Crispin was on my first trip for Riptide, the plan was to meet up with Crispin, Raffi Meyer and Adiv (his brother) in sydney then head up to foster to shoot with Tim Jones for an all DK trip. I got down to sydney and met up with Crispin at his Avalon apartment, i ended up spending a week there with him waiting for some swell, i was star stuck as Crispin was all over every cover of Riptide, had a pile of boards that went to the roof and also had these 2 huge books full of all his coverage, i was loving it, now there are 2 things ill never forget from staying with Crispin, No1 is that Backdoor carve was framed on his wall, it was his favourite shot ever, Crispin is all about rail surfing, and this shot sums him up, No2 was the time he pulled out about 6 perfect boards and cut them in half with a saw so they would fit in the bin!!! the shape wasn’t right apparently?? here i was at the time with one old board that i bought off Crawley and this guy is literally throwing them away!

MORE ROACH

ROACH GETTING HIS BOARDS DIALLED IN FOR THE COMING DAYS

.

This was the first day Roach arrived, as you can see it was only small but banks where perfect and with a nice 3-4 foot swell in the forecast i was itching to see it with a little more size, the next few days that followed Roach had this to himself  at 3-4 foot left wedges, i couldn’t believe our luck, its a spot I’ve surfed for years and always imagined how mental he would go out there, and he didn’t disappoint as you can tell from his section in the vid.

TOW

January 8th, 2012 by matthew

This is from the first time i towed in from a ski, its a bombie close to home that has a sick slabbing left on it, also the right has a crazy ramp, on this day we where basically learning from mistakes, at first i was towing in already up, but as soon as id let go of the rope id find myself loosing alot of speed, so i found it was actually better to prone into it and get up just before the peak. This is the only time ive ever done it, its not huge but it shows that this stuff is possible DK and to what size? well i guess that just depends on how big your balls are!

.

.

.

I’ll blame the drive for getting me in a little to late on this one! this would have been the one aswell….i should have just had a crack anyway

SEASIDE REEF – CALIFORNIA

January 8th, 2012 by matthew

.

Here is an old shot from Todd Glaser, its shot in California at Seaside, Seaside being the home of Roach – Raffi and the rest of the DK god fathers so i was amped to get some good waves there and actually check out the place Roach had been destroying for years!! it was after a month down in Mexico and the water was freezing!

DYLAN LEE

June 8th, 2011 by matthew

PAST FEW MONTHS DYLAN HAS BEEN HANGING OFF THE END OF A WHIPPER SNIPPER MAKING EXTRA COIN BY KEEPING THE GOLD COAST LOOKING BEAUTIFUL, HE’S BEEN FLAT OUT THROUGHOUT SUMMER BUT WITH WINTER KICKING IN THE GRASS JUST DOESNT WANT TO GROW, WHICH MEANS DYLAN HAS ALOT MORE TIME TO SURF

WE HIT D’BAH TODAY,PLENTY OF FUN WAVES BUT AFTER THE LATEST WAVE MARATHON GOING ON HERE I DECIDED TO KICK BACK AND SHOOT A FEW PICS OF DYLAN

.

.

DYLAN SAYS IN THE PAST FEW MONTHS HE’S STRAY ROCKS HAVE SMASHED OVER 4 CAR WINDOW, 2 HOUSE WINDOWS AND A BUNCH OF RANDOM PEDESTRIANS, CLAIMING THE ROCK SMASHED THERE WINDOW’S …NOT HIM

DYLAN TAKES TIME OUT FROM SMASHING CAR WINDOWS AND TAKES TO A D’BAH SECTION

D’BAH GRASS LOOKING WELL MAINTAINED

A SURFERS PARADISE

June 6th, 2011 by matthew

IF YOU LIVE ON THE EAST COAST OF OZ YOU HAVE BEEN BARRELLED OFF YOUR HEAD FOR THE PAST WEEK

ITS BEEN NOTHING SHORT OF PUMPING, THESE GRABS ARE FROM SATURDAY, MYSELF AND LUKE BICKLEY HEADED UP THE COAST IN THE HOPES OF SCORING A FEW WAVES FROM THE WEEKEND CROWDS AT SOUTH STRADDIE…ON THE WAY I TEND TO DRIVE PAST THE FAMOUS “SURFERS PARADISE” JUST TO GET AN INDICATION OF SWELL AND WINDS BEFORE I MAKE MY WAY OVER TO STRADDIE

BUT ON THIS DAY THERE WAS NO NEED TO GO ANY FURTHER, ROMPING 4-6 FOOT PITS, WITH NOT ANOTHER PERSON IN THE WATER, AFTER A FEW HOURS IN THE WATER 2 SURFERS PADDLED OUT AND SAT RIGHT ON OUR PEAK? CONFUSED, WELL SO WAS I… EVEN MORE SO WHEN ONE OF THE GUYS BURNT ME!? (PICTURED BELOW) MILES OF EMPTY BARRELS AND YOU STILL MANAGE TO GET BURNT (WELL IT IS THE GOLD COAST)

BUT AFTER THIS SESSION ME AND LUKE COULDN’T BELIEVE WHAT WE STUMBLED ON, EMPTY PERFECTION IN THE HEART OF THE GOLD COAST WITH NO ONE AROUND

.

.

THIS THING SPAT LIKE A CAT ON CRACK

.

.

PERFECT WINTER CONDITIONS

.

.

.

THE REALITY OFF THE GOLD COAST, NO MATTER HOW UNCROWDED IT IS YOU WILL STILL MANAGE  AT LEAST ONE BURNING (THE GUY NEVER MADE IT OUT OF THE LIP, THEN COPED A FEW SETS ON THE HEAD AND WENT STRAIGHT IN)

.

HUGE THANKS TO LUKE BICKLEY WHO HAS BEEN NAILING ALL THIS AMAZING WATER FOOTAGE

UP CLOSE

May 30th, 2011 by matthew

MICHAEL JENNINGS SHOT THIS CLIP, SHOOTING FISHEYE YOU WANT TO WORK REALLY CLOSE WITH THE PHOTOG, YOU PUT ALOT OF TRUST IN THERE HAND THAT THERE NOT GOING TO KNOCK YOU OUT WITH THE HOUSING THATS FULL OF BOLTS AND FIBREGLASS

OUR AIM WAS TO GET SOME COOL UNDER THE RAIL STUFF, ALTHOUGH THIS ONE CAME A LITTLE TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT, WE DIDNT HIT, BUT IT MUST HAVE BEEN ONLY MILLIMETRES BETWEEN THE LENS AND MY BOARD
